About the New Signs!

The 2 new  gateway signs that welcome folks to Downtown Dartmouth as they enter the area are officially installed! One is located at Sullivan's Pond by the Prince Albert Road and Hawthorne Street intersection and one on Windmill Road by the Dartmouth Commons.

You can learn about the process that was taken for this Gateway Signage project by clicking here or scrolling down.

The new signs recognize that we are in Mi’kma’ki and that we are all treaty people. They contain both a land acknowledgement and a recognition of the contributions that the Black community has made to this part of Mi’kma’ki known as Nova Scotia. You will notice that the artists used vibrant colours and captured the optimistic spirit of downtown Dartmouth, while celebrating Dartmouth’s past & looking to a bright future.

A NOTE ABOUT THE OLD SIGNS
We are working with the community and partners to find a new home for the old signs and look forward for both the old and new to be enjoyed for years to come.

About the Project

There are 2 locations with signs that welcome folks to Downtown Dartmouth as they enter the area: one at Sullivan's Pond by the Prince Albert Road and Hawthorne Street intersection and one on Windmill Road by the Dartmouth Commons.

REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS

The Downtown Dartmouth Business Commission put out a request for proposals from qualified proponents to provide: community consultation; signage design; fabrication and installation of community gateway signs.

The contract was awarded to the proposal deemed to be the most favourable to the interests of the Downtown Dartmouth Business Commission and the community.

COMMUNITY CONSULTATION

The artists will gather input from the Downtown Dartmouth community. The community consultation will determine: how the community sees itself today; how the community would like to see itself represented today and into the future; and what landmarks and/or elements it would like to see highlighted. This will help the artists in their design development to ensure they incorporate  the community's thoughts.

SIGNAGE DESIGN

The artists use the information gathered from the community to create a new design(s) for the Community Gateway Signage. We will work with the artists to keep you involved throughout the process.

SIGN INSTALLATION

The new signs will be installed! We will share on social media and through our newsletter to let you know when the sign installation will be, and we can all enjoy their beauty.
