Matt Gass is Co-Owner and Manager of The Wooden Monkey in downtown Dartmouth.  He has served on the Downtown Dartmouth Board of Directors since 2014. Matt has been such a valuable addition to our board, in fact, he was instrumental in ensuring that SUSTAINABILITY is one of the core values that drives every decision we make at DDBC.

Matt’s story is a rather remarkable dishrags to “riches” story.  Matt began his work in the hospitality industry as a dishwasher, quickly working his way up through the ranks to become co-owner of The Wooden Monkey.  He says he’s proud of the restaurant’s commitment to water conservation, environmental activism, and to supporting local farmers by serving organic, locally-sourced produce and proteins.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to provide good, nourishing food for people.  I have always loved hosting people in my home.  The restaurant feels like an extension of my home and my family.”

Spend a few minutes in conversation with Matt and you will soon discover that he’s a warm genuine person who is passionate about four things: his family, his career, his community and hockey.  The highlight of his career so far brought everything together for Matt when The Wooden Monkey was invited to cater Sidney Crosby’s personal Stanley Cup Celebration party in his Cole Harbour home.  Matt says he had the pleasure of serving Sid the Kid and his guests for this special celebration two years in a row.  Quite an honour for a boy who also grew up in Cole Harbour.

All of us at DDBC are so grateful that Matt accepted a volunteer position on our board back in June of 2014.  Over the past six years, Downtown Dartmouth has evolved so much, and Matt’s been on our side every step of the way.  Whenever DDBC has called upon Matt to assist us with a community event or initiative over the years, he has responded with an uncommon spirit of generosity.  We are grateful for all he’s done to serve downtown Dartmouth as a volunteer board member.
